Here in Texas we have lots of both: Guns and Babies. So when I saw a convo about this topic on twitter, my ears naturally perked up.
Suzanne was sweet and gave me the link to a question another blogger put out to her community. It has great replies.
and It all got me thinking....
I shoot. I used to much more regularly than currently. Life happened yall.
I can field strip an M-4 and put it back together.
This is not that uncommon in Texas.
Zombies I am ready for you.
We do not currently have guns in our house. We probably never will for personal reasons. There are pros and cons to keeping a gun in the house and currently my personal cons out weigh the pros. My dad keeps my gun for me and we are all good.
However, here in Houston a lot of people do have guns in their homes. All my immediate neighbors do. One commenter mentioned that they never thought of it and were in la la (denial) land. I have to admit, I was there too. I take for granted that everyone stores their guns as safely as my family does. And they don't.
Do you trust this guy to keep his guns safe from your visiting child?
He could be Suzy's dad from play group.
I think my child's safety is my responsibility. Because of this, I am afraid I will have to brave the awkwardness and ask if Elena's friend's parents, or babysitters have guns in their homes, and how they store them. I dread this. But my baby is worth it.
I figure the best speech is ...
"We are pro-gun and know many in Texas are. For our daughter's safety, we would like to ask if you keep guns in your home (...) For simplicity's sake, we ask that you please store them in your locked safe while our daughter stays in your home."
My dad keeps his guns in several places throughout the house, some with trigger locks. When she comes over, he sticks them all in his safe. Its easier than triple checking each one to make sure they are locked. People under the age of 50 do not live in his home. Everyone in his home has a very healthy respect for guns.
As soon as Elena is old enough (3?), she will be taught proper gun safety. Later she will learn to shoot.
I appreciate mature, respectful comments about gun safety and your child. Everyone has the right to their opinion. Hateful or accusatory comments will be deleted. Keep it nice yall.
